Welcome to 'Lockdown' the collection.
Being able to whole heartedly focus on art during the lockdown, was a refreshing moment in my life. I would like to take you on the journey of Lockdown as it is an ever evolving period within all our lives.
Warrior:Worrier is a moving and emotional piece. Two distinctive names that sound the same yet contrast in meaning. This piece has a great depth, vulnerability and character in the technique and use of bold strikes of gold, bronze and blues.
The emotions conveyed in the words ‘warrior’ and ‘worrier’ marry seamlessly creating a story in the painting, uniquely interpreted by whoever sees it.
I wanted this painting to be timeless, independent of a time or place. I want you as the viewer to build a personal connection with the piece, perhaps it involves a memory from the past. As I’ve found a painting like this ages with a person, taking on different meanings as times progresses.
In constructing this painting my primary focus was establishing a moody atmosphere. The use of a dark black acrylic paint gave the perfect back drop for the minimal colour palette of blue, yellow and white. Using warmer and cooler tones with the metallic paints lead to the undeniable depth and power of Warrior:Worrier.
For your viewing pleasure, enjoy Warrior:Worrier from a distance, allow yourself to fall into the piece.
Original canvas size : 70cmx100cm
Deciding the name of this painting was simple. This piece reminds me of an ocean, (waves). The way the metallic colours interacts reminds me of the shimmer that you’ll often get from the sea when the sun reflects off of it.
The composition of the piece also reminds me of gills on a fish’s fin i.e. (rainbow fish, tropical fish). Remember the book 'Rainbow Fish' by 'Marcus Pfister' this painting often takes me back to my childhood.
Constructing this painting I was keen to incorporate metallic paints into the piece. The process of mixing the colours off the canvas was a fun way to celebrate these colours.
Unlike warrior , I feel Fin should be viewed close to the piece to create an intimate experience.
Fin is the 'yang' to warriors 'yin' in this collection.
